Activity 9 : "Petru Poni" Technical High School
Location: Iasi, Romania
Students from Class 11A at the "Petru Poni" Technical High School in Iasi have taken a step forward in the world of inclusive sports by inventing a novel game for individuals with visual impairments. Drawing inspiration from volleyball and using elements of other sports, these innovative students, together with their teacher have developed a unique variation of the game that caters to the blind and visually impaired community.
The game utilizes a badminton net and a specially designed audible ball known as the "butterfly," typically used in water polo, to create a soundscape that guides the players. Unlike traditional volleyball, this inventive version provides players a two-second window to locate, pick up the ball from the ground, and throw it back into the opposing team's court, requiring quick reflexes and keen auditory perception.
This new sport not only offers a fun and engaging way for visually impaired individuals to participate in team activities but also emphasizes the importance of sound and touch in gameplay. The rules are carefully crafted to ensure a level playing field and to encourage strategic play and teamwork.
The dedication of the students at "Petru Poni" Technical High School to inclusivity and creativity in sports is commendable. Their pioneering approach to adapting and inventing games opens up new opportunities for participation and enjoyment, regardless of one's visual abilities.
We are excited to share the progress of this innovative sport and look forward to witnessing its potential impact on fostering inclusivity in athletics. The spirit of invention and inclusiveness displayed by the students is a shining example of how sports can be adapted to embrace all members of our community.
